One of the Glasgow Boys, Lavery was much influenced by the open-air painting techniques and modern subject matter of the French Impressionists.

The dynamic balance of the composition - where the dark mass of the horsemen is countered by the vertical flagpole on the right - gives an exhilarating feeling of movement.
