Smith was deaf and dumb, as a result of contracting scarlet fever as a child. He concentrated on oil painting, studying at Edinburgh College of Art and was a member of the Edinburgh Group. The Group were known as a 'bohemian crew' and their unusual behaviour and unconventional art often shocked Edinburgh society.
