Paper knife

Donated by Mrs E. Betsworth
Museum number 1981-727

Paper knife made by the Mars Boys for the Dundee Exhibition of Scottish Home Industries held at the Victoria Galleries in February and March 1891. The purpose of the exhibition was to highlight "fireside" industries. The boys' exhibition included examples of knot work and sewing as well as woodwork.

The Mars was built in the 1840s as a warship. She was later anchored in the Tay and was used as a training ship for delinquent or disadvantaged boys.

The boys received a basic education. The majority were trained for life at sea, although crafts such as shoemaking and tailoring were also taught.
