This black and white photograph is captioned 'Inflating a dead whale with air to keep it afloat.' The picture shows the body of a whale alongside the hull of a whaling ship, with an air spear thrust into the whale. There is a flexible tube attached to the spear, through which air will be pumped to ensure the whale floats so it can be processed.
