This black and white photograph shows the instant a harpoon strikes a whale. The whale is in the centre of the picture, with the harpoon hitting it low on the right side, and the line kinked and stretching upwards and to the right. The entire right top side of the picture is obscured by a cloud of dark smoke, presumably created by the discharge of the whaling gun. In the background of the picture there is a long, low coastline.
