Museum number 1968-88-6

This black and white photograph was taken from the bow of a whale chaser, one of the small but powerful vessels that hunted whales in the South Atlantic and Antarctic. The photograph shows the whaling gun and the line stretching forward to the whale. There is a fountain of white water or possible smoke around the whale, so it is possible the photograph has captured the actual second of impact, when the harpoon has made contact with the target.
