This black and white photograph shows a view from the bridge of a whale catcher. The photographer was looking forward and his view is slightly obscured by the mast of the vessel, but the photograph clearly shows the back portion and tail of a whale jumping into the sea. Presumably the whale has just been harpooned, for a length of the line is seen in front of the vessel, with a crew member, dressed in a long coat, watching. The rigging of the vessel ascends on the left and in the background is a long line of white that may be the edge of the Antarctic ice pack.
