Photograph made of paper

Museum number 1968-91-4

This black and white photograph shows the Dundee whaling ship 'Active' moored in pack ice. The vessel is barque rigged, which means most of the sails on her front two masts are at right angles to the hull, while the sails on the rearmost mast, the mizzen, are fore and aft - they face the same direction as the hull. There are five white painted whaleboats visible, set on davits, and a number of men standing on deck. The crows nest is also visible, but there is nobody manning the telescope that seems an integral part.
