Whalebone for corset
Made of baleen or whalebone

Bequeathed by Miss E. Smith
Museum number 1977-292-2

This very thin strip of brown material is baleen or whalebone. It was shaped for a corset. Whalebone or baleen could cost up to £2000 a ton but had a huge variety of uses, especially in the female fashion industry. The introduction of plastic finished any demand for this useful material.
