This sepia print shows a polar bear on the deck of a whaling ship. The polar bear is suspended by a chain around its neck and jaw so its hind legs are on the deck, while its front paws are in front of it. The position of the chain is forcing its head to face skyward. Behind the bear is the fore section of a whaleboat, with the harpoon gun visible. Beneath the photograph is the inscription: 'Polar Bear.'
