Bronze octagonal Polar Medal. Around the edge is inscribed 'J. Duncan, Discovery 1902-03' On the obverse is the head of King Edward VII in naval uniform, legend 'Edward VS VII Rex Imperator.' On the reverse is part of a sledge with six men and Discovery in the background. There is a white ribbon.
Scott's Polar Expedition of 1901-03 was not a success. His ship, 'Discovery' was trapped in the ice until the Dundee whaling ship 'Terra Nova' under Captain Harry Mackay rescued it.
