A letter from the artist dated July 1956 survives. "This was the first real go I had at a large outside painting, trying to see colour. I remember painting it on one of my father's fields. End of Red Lion Inn on left, and right background - the churchyard trees at Mendham. Charlotte Grey leading the pony... 3 afternoons work ... or 2 ... I forget."
