This black and white image has been taken from an old engraving by W. J. Hughes. The picture shows a busy scene from the whale fishery in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. There are four ships, all three masted, amidst a welter of icebergs and ice floes. One vessel is broadside on in the middle foreground with the other vessels further away. In the immediate foreground there are a number of men on the ice, hunting bears and seals, while whaleboats are out whaling.
