The Reverend George Gilfillan (1813-1878) of the United Presbyterian Church in the old Overgate was a preacher, public speaker, literary critic, and editor of several volumes of poetry. He helped promote the works of Robert Burns, and was instrumental in having the statue of the poet erected in Albert Square.
