A Scotch Fair, c1834

Oil on board

Museum Number 9-1955

This composite painting looks like old St Andrews with its wide street and cathedral ruins. But it also features the parish church of St Monans, Fife, and the tollbooth with the unicorn which survives at Culross.

These lively markets in bygone Scotland were a favourite topic for genre painters.
