This photograph shows a sea view from the deck of a whaling vessel. The view is from the port side, possible astern of the main mast. To the immediate right of the viewer, a dinghy hangs from its davits, with a block hanging from the middle of a line beneath. To the left is a stretch of sea, with a number of ice floes in the centre and what may be four kayaks just beneath the horizon in the right centre background.
