'Self-portrait in the Artist’s Studio' shows Carmichael’s devotion to his native city. Painted in his city centre studio in the Overgate, which he occupied from 1910 for nearly forty years, it shows the young and old Carmichael against the backdrop of St Mary’s Tower. Carmichael’s flamboyant mode of dress is accredited to the time he spent in Paris. He preferred to wear a reefer jacket, generous bow tie and beret whilst working.
