SS 'Active' beset in pack ice
Lantern slide made of glass with metal frame

Donated by Mr Robert Ferguson
Museum number 1972-351-114

This lantern slide shows the Dundee whaling ship S.S. 'Active' beset in pack ice. The vessel can be clearly identified as 'Active' by the figurehead, a seaman with white trousers and a round hat. 'Active' is rigged as a barque, with spars ready for square sails on her fore and main masts, but fore-and-aft rigged on her mizzen. 'Active' is wearing an unidentified flag at her mizzen and has her crow's nest high on the main mast. She has white-painted whale boats hanging on davits along her side.
