Lantern slide made of glass

Museum number 1972-351-50

This lantern slide was probably taken from the side of a whaling ship, or possibly from a spar or whaleboat overhanging the side, It shows an instant in the procedure of flensing a whale. The whale has been captured and towed to the side of the ship, so there are two whaleboats beside the whale, with men on board. Blocks have been attached to the whale from the ship, either to raise it or to turn it for ease of flensing.
