Model of SS Tay
model made mainly of wood

Purchased from the Bell of Arms
Museum number 1963-317

In 1858 the engineering firm Gourlays installed an engine into a sail powered ship the 'Tay'. This was an historic innovation in shipbuilding and started to give the Dundee whalers an edge over their competitors. This model shows the SS Tay before the conversion to steam in 1858. The model has the three masts of a ship, with the short lines typical of a whaling vessel.
