Claesz is best known as a painter of Breakfast pieces. Unlike Banquet pieces, which show expensive food and elaborate table settings, the Breakfast piece features simple fare including fruit, fish, bread rolls and a glass of wine or beer. Typically, the artist shows off his skill in representing the various textures of food, glass and cloth.
