Guido Reni was one of number of successful Bolognese artists who moved to Rome and worked under the direction of Annibale Carracci on the fresco decorations of the magnificent Farnese palace. The cycle depicting the loves of the gods was widely admired at the time and influenced both fresco and canvas painting during the 17th century.
