Lantern slide made of glass with metal frame

Donated by Mr Robert Ferguson in 1975
Museum number 1975-2-4-47

This lantern slide shows the upper jaw of a whale being lowered on to the deck of a whaling ship. The curve of the jaw bisects the top quarter of the picture, with the baleen, or whalebone, hanging down in long dark strips. There are a number of crewmen standing watching the camera, with three men on the right, two on the left and one on the left centre.
