John MacWhirter trained under Robert Scott Lauder at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh. His speciality was landscape - particularly spectacular wild mountain scenery.

The title draws attention to the heroic black bull at the front of the herd. To be 'in the vanguard' is to be in the leading position and is normally used of an army or naval fleet. It was a popular painting and was turned into a print and a US postage stamp.
