Basic instruction in the "3Rs" was the main focus of primary education, with singing, drawing, physical education and needlework for girls as extras.
By 1850 the proportion of children going to school in Dundee was considerably lower than in the rest of Scotland. Children from working class families received little or no schooling: many families had to send their children to work in the mills to bring in more money.
