Whale being flensed alongside S.S. 'Eclipse'
Lantern slide made of glass

Museum number 1872-351-20

This lantern slide shows one stage in the flensing of a black whale. Blocks are being attached to the whale, possibly to spin it so the blubber could be stripped off in a single roll. There are two whaleboats outside the whale, and the hull of 'Eclipse' on the right side of the photograph.
