Museum number 1968-95

This black and white photograph shows the whale catcher 'Southern Wheeler' sailing from left to right on a calm sea. Her name is visible at the bows. There is no harpoon fitted so presumably the vessel was not hunting whales when the photograph was taken. The vessel has a short mast forward, with a crow's nest fitted, a bridge and a funnel painted horizontally in three colours. There is a single lifeboat abaft of the funnel and she wears a flag at her stern. There are men on deck, some looking at the sea, but the wheel at the stern is unattended.
