Armitage was a very successful artist, painting mainly classical and biblical subjects. Taken from the Bible, this dramatic scene shows the moment when a woman is brought before Christ. She had committed adultery and was to be stoned as punishment. Christ said to the crowd around her, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".
