Shabti figure, Ramesside Period, 19th to 20th Dynasties

Museum number 1975-424

A wooden shabti figure (also known as ushabti or shawabti), crudely carved. There are slight traces of colour on the wig and body. Shabtis are small figures, representing servants, that carried out manual tasks on behalf of the spirit in the afterlife. When first introduced as burial goods only one shabti figure was placed in the tomb but later there was one for every day of the year.
