Johnston trained at Edinburgh College of Art under Gillies, Philipson and Sir William MacTaggart between 1951-56. He worked for over 25 years as Schools Adviser in Art and Design in Dundee.

He has stated "I am more interested in painting the atmosphere or the feel of a place than trying to record it." Based on reality, his work became looser and more expressionist through his career. He drew his inspiration from his home town of Dundee - the Pletties being his signature subject matter - and from holidays abroad (mainly France, Portugal and Spain).
