McMarra's Dnudee (2023/24)
McMarra’s Dundee was a partnership project with The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum, THAT (Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust). The project used the developing archive of Dundee singer-songwriter Michael Marra, compiled with DJCAD (Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art) and the Marra family, as a departure point for participants to create their own artwork that tells their own story of living in Dundee and living with a long-term health condition.
Staff working on the project were from the museum’s Creative Learning Team, freelance artists Scott Hudson and Beth Robertson and a project volunteer. The project comprised of eight sessions lasting two hours with a comfort break and ran for eight weeks between February and March 2024.
Participants learned used letterpress techniques to explore and understand printmaking and text; quick print printing for developing drawing techniques; developing individual text and narratives using Haiku poetry; explored the museum collections and objects that link to the life of Michael Marra and visited the temporary exhibition ‘Impressed: Twentieth Century Artist Prints from Dundee’s Collection’.
