Discover the stories behind some of the most captivating modern portraits in Dundee's fine art collection.
Centre Stage: Portraits from a Modern World explores how artists use portraiture to capture far more than a likeness. Through pose, expression, clothing and setting, these works reveal personality, identity and the many ways we choose to present ourselves to the world. Themes that feel just as relevant today in an age shaped by image, celebrity and social media.
Bringing together portraits of actors, artists, musicians, writers and other remarkable individuals, the exhibition showcases highlights from Dundee's outstanding art collection alongside exciting new works and important loans. Featured artists include Isaac Julien, Stewart Carmichael, Henry Young Alison and a portrait of Dundee based musician Howie by Steven Higginson.
Some portraits are bold, dramatic and full of confidence, while others offer quieter, more intimate moments. Together they reveal how every portrait tells a story, not only about the person being painted but also about the artist.
Designed to complement the hugely popular Curtain Call: Costumes from Stage and Screen, on display at The McManus until November 2026, Centre Stage explores another kind of performance: the carefully crafted image. Whether through costume, gesture or expression, artists and sitters work together to create portraits that continue to intrigue, inspire and surprise.
From larger-than-life personalities to moments of quiet reflection, Centre Stage invites you to look closer and discover the stories behind the faces.
