Four Brothers' Heroic WWII Medals on Display at The McManus in Dundee Ahead of VE Day
Ahead of the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, four Military Crosses from the same family have gone on display at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum. The medals tell the extraordinary story of wartime heroics of four brothers.
The brothers from the Rae family survived some of the fiercest fighting of the Second World War and returned to their hometown of Dundee with remarkable battlefield achievements and recognition for gallantry in the field. Indeed one brother, even received an additional bar on his military cross for his courageous actions.

Formal Donation of Ship Models and Paintings from The Fraternity of Masters & Seamen to Dundee's Permanent Collection
The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum are pleased to share the news of a significant new donation to the City's permanent collection by The Fraternity of the Seamen, Dundee. The material, which previously had been on long term loan to the museum since 1876, has been formally donated to the City's permanent collection. The collection includes eight artworks and three ship of the line models.
This significant and important collection has had a long association with the museum, having first been offered for display by the Fraternity in 1876. An 1879 Free Library Report describes the collection as 'a valuable and interesting collection of pictures and models belonging to the Seamen Fraternity'. Scottish Creations at The McManus
This week The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum is showcasing art works produced in their partnership project with Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust, START group. The work is now part of a bigger collection of works called Scottish Creations in collaboration with ‘Scottish Ensemble’ and ‘Creative Lives’ exploring a whole range of stories – musical, visual, literal and digital.
In this year of Scotland’s Stories, the project was created to celebrate storytelling from cities all over the country. It features curated works of art from poetry, to weaving and printing submitted by members of the local communities.
The work has been part of a touring concert and exhibition stopping off at Mull, Skye, Inverness, Shetland, Aberdeen and finally here at The McManus in Dundee…
Memories and Stories with ST/ART at The McManus
The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum is very excited to be working in partnership with Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust as part of a national ‘Year of Scotland’s Stories’ community project called ‘Scottish Creations’.
Inspired by the resilience of the UK’s non-professional art sector during this challenging year and in celebration of 2022 Year of Scotland's Stories, Creative Lives and Scottish Ensemble have invited local amateur artists from across the country to respond to the theme of storytelling through a range of artforms: visual art, sculpture, poetry, creative writing and photography. These creative responses will form part of both travelling and digital exhibitions, celebrating and sharing the diversity and creativity of Scotland.

Dundee leisure and culture venues get on board with new gift card
A new local gift card to help boost tourism and support efforts to keep spending local is set for launch in Dundee. The new Dundee Gift Card is part of a Scottish Government led initiative to give every region of Scotland its own Scotland Loves Local Gift Card, driven by Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP), alongside Perth based fintech Miconex.
Leisure & Culture Dundee venues including Broughty Castle, Mills Observatory, Dundee Ice Arena, Camperdown Wildlife Centre and The McManus Art Gallery & Museum will accept the new Dundee Gift Card, alongside, alongside V&A Dundee, Scotland’s design museum.

The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum is inviting visitors to take a walk down memory lane and look at the history of shopping and licensed trades in the city with their latest exhibition, The Street at The McManus.
The McManus; Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum have worked closely with Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre to provide an immersive experience. The large street set has taken over one of the galleries, where visitors can now visit a shop from days gone by and stand at the bar. The McManus marks Nelson Mandela Day
The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum invited Chris Law MP, ahead of Nelson Mandela Day on Sunday 18 July, to view items on loan from his collection that they have been put on display in their Making of Modern Dundee Gallery. Included in the display are signed first editions of 'In His Own Words' and 'The Long Walk to Freedom' by Nelson Mandela as well as ephemera and interesting items relating to the campaign to free Mandela that have been collected over the past 20 years.

The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum will be returning to 7 day opening from Monday 28 June, 2021. The galleries have been open 5 days a week since April and are now ready, once again, to provide their famous warm welcome every day.
Visitors and Dundonians alike will be able to experience Dundee's museum collection in eight beautiful open gallery spaces. The galleries act as the City's civic memory, housing fascinating individual items of art, which provide an engaging insight into the history of Dundee.
Also on show are two major exhibitions, 'A Love Letter to Dundee: Joseph McKenzie Photographs 1964-1987' and 'Time and Tide: The Transformation of The Tay' which both focus on change in the city.
